Pentagon Report Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon report has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Event

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the material he distributed, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public in the coming days.
